Projects:
The Need: The need is overwhelming…there are children who have no parents and no place to call home, there are children who are hungry, there are children dying due to lack of clean drinking water and proper medical attention, there are children with no shoes or school supplies, there are children who receive no education…and the list goes on and on
Why we Exist: We exist to meet the needs of orphan and needy children in our community
What we are doing:
*School: Empowering Children Through Education
Most children must walk 45 min to 1 ½ hours to get to school. This means many children do not go to school or only go to school for half a day since lunch is not provided at school they walk home for lunch but do not return to school. In our area many children have never even gone to school. Instead children spend their days raising cattle, digging gardens, cleaning house and caring for younger children.
Giving children education is giving them the gift of hope and opportunity. Our vision is to provide quality and creative education for children ages 2-18. We have started our education program with the youngest children. We have a Pre-School/Kindergarten serving 70 children. Our next educational building project is to build and begin to operate a primary school.
We will also be building a learning center for children who have had no or little previous education. This will be a place to especially help these children catch up educationally as well as offer them training in vocations and life skills.
*Orphan Care/Orphanage and Needy Child Care:
There are many orphans in Uganda who need love, stability, shelter, food, care, and hope. These children are orphans for many reasons including: HIV/AIDS, accidents, lack of medical education and care, suicide, and woman dying during pregnancy/childbirth.
Other children, while they may not be orphans they are very needy. Poverty is a huge issue facing many children and their families. Some parents are unable to even pay for their children to have school books or a school uniform and can not afford the school fees. This is part of the reason why so many children do not go to school. Other children might have parents but their parents have abandoned them because they could not feed, clothe and care for their children. These children often live on the street or are taken in by other families that might mistreat them.
Since children are facing such hardships we are doing all we can to assist them. We are helping to provide school fees, uniforms and supplies. We are helping to provide clothing, food and medical care.
We are building a ‘Place to call home’ for these precious children. Our vision is not only to provide shelter, but also to provide the love and security of ‘Home’ : To create both a since of belonging and of purpose for these children. Our Orphan Home will be a safe and secure place for children to grow. It will be a place for children to learn to take responsibility (doing chores, working on the farm, raising animals, receiving tutoring, doing school work) as well as a place that allows them the freedom of being a child (playing on playground, having stories read to them, dancing, singing, playing football, knowing someone cares for them and is watching over them).
Clean Water Project:
One of the leading causes of death in children in Africa is dirty drinking water.
It is for this reason we have built a water tank that is large enough not only to provide drinking water for the children in our community, but also for the whole local community.
Medical Care:
Children are dying simply because of lack of medical information/education and simple medical care. Innocent lives are slipping away before they are fully lived.
We are partnering with others to bring a medical clinic and medical volunteers to Lake Bunyonyi.
We are also creating an HIV awarness, testing and counseling campaign as well focusing on maternal and children’s health education.
