Vino Cotto--Savor the Flavor!
For over four generations in the historic, mountaintop town of Montepaone in Calabria, Italy, the Montillo family makes homemade wine and vino cotto (a naturally-sweet, cooked wine gourmet syrup) for their personal use.
Starting in 1970, Vito Montillo moved his wife, Saveria, and four sons from their southern Italian home to Newton, Massachusetts. There they started a new life together, carrying on most of their wonderful Italian traditions.
Vito and Saveria's second son, Gregorio and his wife Deena Conti Montillo continued one of their favorite traditions, wine making. During this process, they make authentic vino cotto, too. One fall afternoon while making a new batch of wine, Deena suggested to Greg that they should try making and selling this delicious, versatile syrup. They decided to go for it.
In August 2008, they followed their dream to be the first US producer of authentic vino cotto and established Montillo Italian Foods (MIF). Just two months later, full of hope and enthusiasm, their first bottle of Vino Cotto di Montillo was sold. Their October 2018 batch marks their 10th Anniversary!
Over the years, Greg and Deena have received many complements from their Italian customers who say that their vino cotto "tastes just the way they remember it as a kid living in the old country." Hearing these words make it all worthwhile, equals success, and warms their hearts. They are very proud to share this small part of their Italian heritage with you.
